Gaining skills is essential to any character development, your choice of skills will largely define what your character is capable of and how useful you can be in certain situations. In T2A there are 49 skills, each of which can be gained to a maximum of 100. You gain a higher skill-level by using the skill or, up to 30, by paying an NPC to teach you.
A character can gain a total of 700.0 points in any skills they choose, and 225 in their stats.
Some skills are modified by related primary stats (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence), which is why the skills menu can show real skill numbers (also refered as base skills) or displayed skill numbers (via the "Show Real" toggle button on the Skills list (ALT+K)). Real skill is the unmodified number, while displayed skill has the stat bonus added (if applicable for that skill).
Training a skill through use is the only way to reach 100. There are many ways to train your skills, and while most will gain in the course of normal gameplay, there are all sorts of methods to gain them faster (most of which involve using a macro program such as Razor).
Skills are subject to stat loss if you die with 5 or more short term murder counts.
Skill titles are determined by 2 factors. The first factor is, what is your highest skill? This will be the skill that is displayed. However, if you have multiple skills at the same level (eg: Grandmaster), then your skill title is determined somewhat alphabetically, as per the skill list below.
|Skill Title||Base Skill Needed|
|No Title||29 or below|
|Bowcraft & Fletching||Bowyer|
You will notice that most of the list is sorted alphabetically, but that some skills seems to be in the wrong place. This is because the list is sorted according to the "original" skill script name that was used in the early Beta days of Ultima Online. For example: "Animal Taming" is sorted as if it said "Tame" and "Provocation" is sorted as if it said "Incite". Also, some skills have been added at a later stage (such as Meditation, Remove trap and Stealth). Those skills have been added to the bottom of the list.

Training Skills from NPC's
NPC training is accessed by saying the NPC's name followed by the word Train* and then the name of the skill you want to be trained in. You can see the skills any NPC will teach by typing the NPC's name followed by the word train*. Once you enter the command words the NPC will give a price, and by dropping the given amount of gold on them your skill will rise. NPC's can't teach a skill beyond 30 points.
- The word "teach" can also be used in place of the word "train".
