"The art of making scrolls for a Mage is similar to the art of kneading for a Baker. It's an essential. Get it wrong and nothing good will come of it. I've made a study of scrollwork, although this is not likely to impress anyone but the most devoted of scholars. Every Mage's style is different, either in lettering or in materials. I can safely say that the more skilled Mages have the more esoteric scrolls. The success of a scroll does not seem to reside in the penmanship or the quality of ink. Blood, although popular to certain people, carries no more power or assurance than berry juice."

Inscription
Inscription is the skill of writing in Ultima Online. However, this does not only mean to simply write in books and on scrolls. Once the scribe has more skill, they can create magic scrolls, thus the skill is with useful in combination with Magery.
Select skill, target a blank scroll, select a spell from the list. (The list includes all spells that you can cast and for which you have sufficient reagents. Reagents are expended when inscribing the scroll.)
To copy a spell from a scroll onto a spellbook, drag the scroll onto the book. Inscription is not necessary to do this.
Scribing magic spells uses the same amount of mana that is required when normally casting a spell. See Magery for Intelligence requirements.
Training
Before training you will need to obtain a bulk amount of blank scrolls and reagents. It should also be recommended to have 100.0 Magery and Meditation, and sufficient Intelligence.
- 0.0 - 30.0: Train from NPC Scribe
- 30.1 - 50.0: Copy a book with some text to a blank book
- 50.1 - 75.0: Make spell scroll Energy Bolt
- 75.1 - 100.0: Make spell scroll Flamestrike

- 0.0 - 30.0: Train from NPC Scribe
- 30.1 - 55.0: Make 4th Circle Scrolls
- 55.1 - 65.0: Make 5th Circle Scrolls

Inscription is the skill used to scribe magic spell scrolls and runebooks
Spell Scrolls
In order to inscribe a magic spell, you must learn the spell by adding the magic spell scroll to your Spellbook
- 1st Circle magic scrolls to 3rd Circle magic scrolls can be purchased at Mage shops
- 1st Circle magic scrolls to 5th Circle magic scrolls can be found in Level 2 locked containers
- 4th Circle magic scrolls to 6th Circle magic scrolls can be found in Level 3 locked containers
- 6th Circle magic scrolls to 8th Circle magic scrolls can be found in Level 4 locked containers
- All spell magic scrolls can be found in the loot of spell casting monsters that correlate with the monster's toughness
Runebooks
- Runebooks can be scribed by scribes with 8 blank scrolls, 1 recall scroll, 1 gate travel scroll and an umarked rune
- The number of recall charges a runebook can hold will range from 5 to 10, depending on the skill of the Scribe
- To recharge your runebook, simply drag and drop your recall scrolls onto the runebook
- You can place up to 16 marked runes into a runebook

Inscription does not provide any bonus to spells in this era

The following list of scrolls are the most commonly used and can be recommended to scribe when training:
- Recall scrolls when training 4th Circle scrolls
- Mark scrolls when training 6th Circle scrolls
- Gate Travel or Meteor Swarm scrolls when training 7th Circle scrolls
- Summon Daemon or Resurrection scrolls when training 8th Circle scrolls
Double-clicking a magic spell scroll in your backpack will cast the spell without the requirement of reagents, but instead consumes the scroll when used
