Archery is long-ranged Weapon Skill. There are a few considerations specific to Archery skill:

  • All bows are two-handed weapons, this means that actions which need you to have a hand free, such as drinking a potion, can not be performed without disarming.
  • You must have line-of-sight – even in UO you cannot shoot around corners.
  • You must be standing still to fire
  • You must have arrows or bolts in your pack and the appropriate bow type equipped to fire

Weapons

There are two main types of weapons available to practitioners of Archery, bows and crossbows. The former require a good supply of Arrows on hand, while the more technical crossbows fire smaller Bolts at enemies. All of these can be crafted by Bowyers. The Bowcraft and Fletching skill is used to create bows and arrows.

Bows are typically slightly faster to fire then crossbows and also usually offer a larger attacking radius. On the other hand, crossbows often pack more punch per bolt and so might be the better choice for a lengthy battle.

PvP

Generally an underrated PvP combat skill. but when used as a secondary weapon it can be just the thing to finish off your oppenent thanks to Insta Hit. Basically smack them with your melee weapon of choice, and when they run tap your arm bow/heavy x-bow hot key.

Macroing Archery

  • Blade Spirits - This requires a house and a mage to cast blade spirit into the a corner of the house that has been boxed off. Simply record a macro to cast a blade spirit in this corner after the duration of a blade spirit and on your archer set a target macro running. It is strongly recommended to have scavenger enabled to retrieve any fallen arrows.
  • Order Guard - This method is similar to above but requires a healer instead of a mage; thus simply box the order guard in your house and fire away! The Order Guard will heal him/herself.
  • Monster Spawn - This method requires only one account and knowledge of the UO world. Basically round up as many monsters are you can find and use the cliffs and ledges to separate them from yourself. When you are in a safe location and the monsters keep growling at you, run a target macro that: targets closest grey npc/attack target/wait for 7 seconds. You will need to keep an eye on this one for when its finished and that you haven't been PK'd...but it requires less attention than dungeon crawling so you can play another account at the same time.

Notes

Heavy Crossbows are the strongest weapon in the game, and they are also the slowest weapon in the game

Bowyer NPCs sell arrows for 3 gold pieces per and bolts for 6 gold pieces per, and can carry up to 999 arrows and bolts
