Newbie key
#11
No one has to do it. Just like no one has to do anything in uo. You could farm up gold to buy said key if you wished, and probably do it a lot faster than a guy farming newbs. It is extremely difficult and tedious process to get the key. It's not a game breaker either way, I just hate to see any avenue of uo fun road blocked without good reason. No big deal.

Sorry, just not going to agree. Playing the game to get things is different than farming newbie characters. Quite literally, a new player could sit here and make 15 new tinkers a week before they even get started, just waiting for that big payday. It is not even remotely difficult, nor tedious, to click the skill selection and Create, or click Delete 7 days later.

Make it a goal to strive for in the game and people will play the game to get it.

*shrugs* I don't see a Newb wasting a week of play for an extremely small chance at a minor convenience item, but it's not worth arguing over.

There are definitely negatives to this system. Encouraging people to make newbie characters to obtain the key will directly impact save times since there will be a lot of new characters made that otherwise wouldn't have existed. Also anyone with access to unlimited proxies could potentially just continue to make new tinkers until they got the key. If it were a 1% chance and the player was determined to get a few keys, this could easily turn into hundreds of newbie characters that will over time creep up the save times.

TBH I'm starting to reconsider whether this should be a "new character" award or obtained another way.

Put it in random town lock/strongboxes with a 1 in 5000 chance to spawn. Sort of roleplay "ish" and still incredibly hard to get.

Honestly i like this idea or maybe something close to it. The whole Newbie farming thing for a key would cause problems like that but i wouldn't wanna toss out the key idea at least. Maybe a rare boss drop or Platinum reward or possibly even a quest of some sorts. Who knows but these are just some random ideas. I am with Jack on the whole server save time thing though as id hate for it to get worse as its pretty dang nice as is.

If it's going to hurt save times, then def fuggit.

I wouldn't get rid of the idea of the newb key, but maybe focus on a way for a monster to drop it or maybe something like a bandit camp but a tinker is trapped inside and he has a small % chance to give a newbie key as a reward and gold kinda like the escorts. Just a thought so dont hate on it! Any ideas to throw on that?
