A murderer is any character 5 or more long term murders. Their name will appear in red, and their karma title will show as "The Murderer", instead of a standard title.
The murder system in Ultima Online works as follows:
- Every time a player receives a kill count, 1 long term and 1 short term murder are added to the player's tally.
- Every 40 hours, a long term murder will decay. Every 8 hours, a short term murder will decay. These timers are running all the time, simultaneously.
- If the player goes above 5 long term murders, they will be known as a murderer.
- If a player resurrects with 5 or more short terms, they will be subject to stat loss. They will lose 9-20% of their stats and skills, depending on how many short term murders they have.
- If a player resurrects with 4 or less short terms, they will not receive any stat loss. It does not matter how many long term murders they have.
- A murderer will only turn innocent if their long term kill counter drops below 5.
