This happened once before a long time ago as well, then happened again tonight. What happens is, I grab the flag of the opposing team (from the flag post, not getting it passed off to me by a team mate), and then at some point before the 180 seconds are up, the flag is automatically returned to the flag post.
The first time it happened there was about 90-120 seconds passed when it returned, this time it was less than 30 seconds. Farnk was on me the whole time, so he might be able to confirm witnessing it. I can't give you much evidence other than my journal file. It shows me grabbing the flag, my health never getting very low (not dying), an absence of "You must take the Red flag to your flag in ___ seconds or it will be returned!" (usually says that every 30 seconds), and then finally Tempest capping for his team (impossible if the flag was still in my pack).
