In pre-t2a (manual and patch notes) higher armor was to decrease magic damage not just magic resist.
It makes sense from a roleplaying perspective to:
a. wood shield: block lightning style spells, misc
b. metal shield: block fire style spells, misc (poison etc)
would be cool if parry helped in pvm... right now as an archer i'm useless at TI... so that doesnt help in that regard.
