Karma gains from npcs - Jack of Shadows - 06-14-2016
I'm fairly sure that giving npcs gold in this era was an action that would give low level karma gains. If your karma got too low from begging, you'd stop gaining and have to feed them gold one at a time to get your karma back up again and be able to gain skill.
