Correct, we have no donation currency. No player will ever be able to purchase in game items/skills/etc for money here.
Platinum is an alternative to gold in the sense that it's more of a reward currency than a straight up "farming" currency. You can get platinum by doing most things that also earn you gold (such as hunting monsters, doing treasure maps, picking chests), and it is also a time-based reward for activity on top of the reward currency for winning events. I don't have the statistics, but I'm sure more platinum gets introduced through time-reward and event-reward than is actually farmed from monsters.
Since platinum is a lot more rare than gold is, it encourages people to trade it as well.
The rewards which come from platinum are unobtainable through other normal gameplay:
